Having a stroke or experiencing a sudden illness or accident, can be a life-changing experience. It can change many things in a person’s life, it may cause short-term, long-term or even permanent changes and have a physical impact on the person. However, it doesn’t define who they are.
Twice a week, myself and my husband, run our Wellbeing Gym Sessions; these are coached group sessions for individuals who have experienced a stroke and/or a life-changing event, those who might need support with rehabilitation and/or who are coming to the gym for the first time to look after their physical and mental health.
For individuals attending our Wellbeing Gym Sessions coming to the gym means progress, recovery, confidence-building and raising self-esteem. We also encourage loved ones, who might also have taken on the role of carer too, to join in with the sessions too.
Strong Women [Wellbeing Members]
In addition to the wellbeing gym group sessions, I work with a smaller group of women a couple of times a week, to introduce them to other lifts and exercises, as well as advancing their gym confidence.
If you are someone who has experienced a stroke or life-changing event, and/or if you have a loved one who you know will benefit from these sessions, please make contact below to discuss joining us.

Please reach us at info@strongwithbrydie.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question
Many who attend the sessions are stroke survivors, individuals who have experienced a sudden illness or accident, individuals who live with a chronic condition, have been in poor mental health or those living with anxiety.
However, it is not only those who have experienced a medical episode who benefit from these sessions. We also welcome partners, carers and friends to take part int eh session too.
Our Wellbeing Gym Sessions focus on:
FLEXIBILITY
We use various moves with the group to take their muscle and joints ranges beyond their daily ranges, this in turn helps to wake up the central nervous system.
CO-ORDINATION
Using various multi-directional drills we start to re-train the brain, to send new signals to the body, to re-learn more complex moves.
STRENGTH
By including strength-based exercises and introducing equipment to complement the movements into the sessions, we are working on strengthening the muscles and increasing bone density to aid mobility and, for some, rehabilitate those areas of the body affected by a medical episode.
MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING
The sessions are as much focused on the individuals’ mental health and wellbeing, as it is their physical health. In addition to the many benefits the group will get from exercising, for example the release of endorphins after they’ve finished, we structure our sessions so each person leaves with a sense of achievement and looking forward to the next one.
We strive to create an environment that feels safe, relaxed and supportive. We recognise that for many of the individuals, this weekly session is an important part of their social life. It gives them the opportunity to get out of the house, to engage and socialise.
The Wellbeing Gym Sessions are twice a week – Mondays and Wednesdays at 11am
Details of the additional strength sessions, which I run with a small group of women, is provided once individuals have been with us for a number of our wellbeing sessions.
Sessions are run at Ford Community Gym, Plymouth
The Wellbeing Gym membership is £20 a month, paid on the first of each month.
